Drain Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting: How We Choose the Right Method

These two methods aren’t interchangeable, and defaulting to one without inspecting the line first is how the same drain ends up on a repeat service schedule. Here’s how each works and when it applies.

Drain Snaking (Rooter Service)
A rotating cable is fed into the line to punch through or pull apart a blockage and restore flow. It’s the right first response for a single-fixture clog, a localized hair blockage, or a straightforward soft obstruction. Fast, effective, and appropriate when the condition calls for it.

Hydro Jetting
High-pressure water scours the full interior circumference of the pipe, stripping away grease film, mineral scale, and compacted debris that a snake leaves behind on the pipe walls. It’s the better choice for recurring clogs, grease-heavy commercial lines, or any line with significant accumulated buildup.

For lines with root infiltration, a snake may clear the immediate blockage, but hydro jetting followed by a camera pass is more likely to confirm the line is fully clear and identify whether root damage has reached the point of needing repair. A camera inspection before service lets us choose based on what’s actually inside the pipe, not on assumption.
