Conventional Tank Water Heaters

A conventional installation can include:

Disconnecting and removing the existing water heater when replacement is required.
Positioning the new unit and connecting the water and fuel or electrical lines.
Installing required control, discharge, and safety components.
Checking for leaks, proper operation, and hot-water delivery.
Cleaning the work area after the installation is complete.

San Diego Water Heater Permits & Safety Requirements

Permit requirements depend on the jurisdiction, property type, and scope of the installation. The City of San Diego requires plumbing permits for system alterations, additions, and replacements. Certain standard water heater replacements may qualify for a Simple No-Plan Plumbing/Gas Permit, which doesn’t require plan review, when the property isn’t historic or potentially historic.

Tankless conversions and projects involving additional gas, electrical, structural, commercial, multifamily, or historic-property considerations may require a different review. Rules also vary among San Diego County municipalities, so City of San Diego requirements shouldn’t be applied countywide.

Installation planning may need to account for manufacturer instructions, energy requirements, venting, thermal expansion, and the temperature and pressure relief valve. This valve releases water if the temperature or pressure reaches an unsafe level. Thermal expansion is the pressure created when heated water expands within a closed plumbing system.
